This two-part event will give you a taste of both self-publishing and traditional publishing.
Part I – Baye McNeil will explain how he self-published in Japan and how he got Japanese companies to partner with him to do audiobooks for his current two books: “Loco in Yokohama” and “Hi, I am Loco and I am Racist”.
Part II – Ayanna Coleman will then explain the inner workings of the publishing world for attendees who are interested in going the traditional publication route, including acquiring an agent, navigating different types of publishers, and generally how to stand out and get people interested in your work.
Your Speakers
Baye McNeil is an author, columnist, lecturer, and activist, born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. He’s the author of two critically acclaimed books on life as a non-Japanese person of African descent living in Japan. He is also a published columnist in two different languages, The Japan Times in English and Tokyokeizai in Japanese. In his columns, Baye profiles people of color, as well as shares his own reflections on living in Japan while Black, and current events.
Along with his writing, Baye also lectures and conducts workshops on the Black experience in Japan, race issues, reducing presumptions, and diversity & inclusiveness in Japan at universities, companies, and organizations throughout Japan. Baye has appeared numerous times on BBC and has been profiled in international publications including The New York Times. He has written op-eds for several outlets including The Washington Post. Currently, Baye resides with his wife in Tokyo.
Ayanna Coleman is a business efficiency and marketing consultant with an educational background in marketing and English literature. She has worked in the publishing industry within publishing houses, literary agencies, as a book reviewer, and many years as a children’s librarian. She also earned a Master of Science degree in Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois, one of the programs in the United States.
Ayanna has spoken at conferences in front of hundreds, crafted panels and programming for myriad audiences, and connected with organizations and individuals within the education, consumer and professional services, media, nonprofit, and financial industry groups. Through it all, she found her passion in supporting entrepreneurs and growth-stage organizations to elevate their voices and find the tools and systems that work for them so that they can make their dreams and missions a reality. Ayanna resides in Tokyo with her husband and foster dog.
