    6月17日に東京で開かれた米国の奴隷解放を祝うイベント「ジューンティーンス・ガラ」は、今年で2回目。イベントに込めた思いを、主催の「レガシー・ファウンデーション・ジャパン」代表、ラターニャ・ウィティカさん（47）に聞いた。【構成・幸長由子】 リンカーン米大統領が1863年、全ての奴隷は自由だという「奴隷解放宣言」に署名しましたが、その情報が行き渡るまでに2年半かかりました。そして65年6月19日、最後にテキサス州南部ガルベストンにグレンジャー将軍が赴き、奴隷に自由であることを告げたのです。米国の独立記念日は7月4日。6月19日は、いわば私たちアフリカ系米国人の人種としての独立記念日です。 テキサス州などでは、ジューンティーンスを祝う習慣がありました。しかし、私は自分につながるこの大切な日のことを近年までよく知りませんでした。アフリカ系米国人の中でも、この日を知らない人は多くいたと思います。学校の歴史の教科書に載っておらず、このことについて教わらなかったのです。

    6月19日は、米国での奴隷解放を記念し、歴史を学び、黒人文化の豊かさを再確認する日だ。その「ジューンティーンス」と呼ばれる日を祝うイベントが17日夜、東京であった。そこでは、一人の青年のための特別な「卒業式」が催された。ルーツに対する周囲の無理解に失望した彼を励ますため、有志によるはなむけだった。 「ある青年の新たなステップです」 黒人特有の細かい編み込みなどで思い思いに整えられた頭髪。きらびやかなドレスやスーツ、和服に身を包んだ人たちが、東京都港区の社交クラブに集った。「ジューンティーンス・ガラ」と銘打たれたイベントの最終盤、18歳の青年が壇上に立った。髪は編み込みの「コーンロー」に整え、紺のスーツ姿。彼に「あなたの卒業に敬意を表す」と書かれた卒業証書が手渡されると、会場は温かい拍手に包まれた。
